As a member of the Japan Karate Association World Federation (JKA WF), SKDI is committed to traditional shotokan karate instruction. Shotokan Karate-Do International, with beginnings as JKA of New York, was founded by Masataka Mori in 1968 and has since flourished to many dojos.  The current Chief Instructor and Chairman of SKDI Shu Takahashi carries on Mori-sensei's legacy of the highest technical level of karate and building good character. SKDI Senior Instructors are internationally certified by Tokyo JKA Headquarters Judges, Examiners, and Instructors. SKDI regularly holds events such as training camps, tournaments, and seminars to develop technique and friendship.

JKA SKDI is one of the three officially recognized regional organizations sanctioned by JKA / WF Tokyo Honbu (Headquarters) to which many local dojos are affilidated for membership, exam, tournaments, camps and more.  We maintain close relationships and collaborate with our fellow USA partner organizations - JKA WF America and JKA American Federation.

JKA of New York is the Honbu (Headquarters) Dojo of JKA SKDI.

Sad News – Passing of JKA HQ Chief Instructor Ueki Masaaki:  SKDI would like to share this recent announcement from the JKA Headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.  "On July 14th, 2024, Chief instructor Ueki Masaaki (10th Dan), who had been undergoing treatment for illness, passed away. He was 85 years old. We would like to offer our deepest condolences. The funeral has already been held with only family members present, in accordance with the wishes of the bereaved family."  SKDI members express our most sincere condolonces to the family and our deep gratitude for Ueki-sensei's many years of leadership in the JKA.  His love of karate was felt over the years as he helped to spread JKA karate across the world.
